Zealandia is a boutique New Zealand company which manufactures a range of products from luxurious high grade Brushtail fur, unique to New Zealand. This collection of elegant eco fur throws and décor items add stunning ambience to any room.

Brushtail fur, also known as New Zealand Possum fur (not to be confused with the Northern Hemisphere Opossum) has the softness and warmth of cashmere, is low pilling and has exceptional thermal qualities due to its hollow-fiber construction. The fur is incredibly soft, resilient and non-static. The properties of Brushtail fur is compared to that of the Polar Bear. Zealandia uses only A-Grade Southern skins in all our pieces and all of our products are 100% New Zealand made. The Brushtail Southern Skins are sought after for their luxuriant dense fur and rich colours – a by-product of the cold New Zealand climate and rich foliage.

The Brushtail was imported from Australia in 1800 and having no natural predators in New Zealand, its population flourished. There are currently an estimated 80 million Brushtails in the country. The New Zealand Brushtail shares no similarities with the American Opossum. The New Zealand Brushtail is a marsupial (they carry their young in a pouch) and have a long prehensile tail, while the American species does not.

The Brushtail is New Zealand’s main mammal pest, eating through approximately 20,000 tons of vegetation a day. Acres and acres of New Zealand native forests have been eliminated solely because of this pest. Brushtails also eat and destroy both the eggs and chicks of native birds, many of which are endangered.

Brushtails are not protected under New Zealand law. Trapping by the public has been legal since 1947 but has not made any significant difference to the ever-increasing population. Huge poison drops by the Department of Conservation (DOC) seem to be the only way of keeping the population from getting entirely out of control.

Zealandia also offers products made from Rabbit Fur and Goat Skin. Rabbit fur has long been a popular choice due to its fine quality, rich colours and soft texture. Zealandia’s Goat Skin throws feature bold prints and stunning natural colours.
